Overview: Gibson Custom Shop, a Division of the world’s premiere musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology, is proud to announce a new and exciting special run guitar program, the Gibson Custom Collectors Choice™ Program. As many know, vintage guitars and the vintage guitar market have engendered many a passionate collector. This new program endeavors to work with these passionate collectors to reproduce some of the finest examples from their collection. This opens up so many wonderful opportunities to showcase these rare and amazing instruments, some known and many unknown; giving the fans of these instruments the opportunity to get a Custom Shop limited number reproduction of these gems.
Imagine being let into a secret vault. Inside are some of the most coveted and priceless Gibson guitars of all time. These guitars belong to the world’s top collectors — those who live and breathe vintage guitars, those who have a knack for unearthing guitars so extraordinary they’d make Jimmy Page or Pete Townshend drool.
By proudly presenting the new Collectors Choice program, the Gibson Custom Shop gives you the opportunity to crack open such a vault and own a limited edition reproduction of a guitar that is the stuff of legend.
Each Collectors Choice guitar has been carefully selected because of its historical relevance or uniqueness. The Collectors Choice guitars have stories to tell, songs that live inside them. They have helped make history.
The Custom Shop Collectors Choice guitars will often be named for their owners and/or previous owners. Sometimes there will be no Collector or previous owner name attached at all, just a cool Custom reproduction of an instrument from a Collector who wishes to remain anonymous. The first in the Collectors Choice series will be the Collectors Choice #1 – Melvyn Franks 1959 Les Paul VOS, named after the current owner/collector of the guitar, Melvyn Franks. Additionally, there will be a Collectors Choice #1 Gary Moore Aged Edition of this model. As this guitar was previously owned and made famous by Gary before it belonged to Melvyn, Gary will be signing certificates for the Gary Moore Aged Edition and will be included as part of the collateral.
As with every reproduction of an existing model, Gibson Custom Shop examined the original guitar in great detail to recreate it exactly. Aside from the splendor of the guitar itself, its magic is in the smallest details: the “out of phase” middle position tone, the missing silver inserts on the top two “tophat” control knobs, the reversed neck pickups (with adjustable pole pieces facing the bridge) and the accurate neck shape. An aged version of the guitar has even been hand-worn to look exactly as the original does.
In addition, the Collectors Choice #1 Models capture all the historically accurate details that make a Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul the most accurate reproduction of the ’Burst ever produced. Details such as the deep-set long neck tenon, correct body top binding in the cutaway, accurate BurstBucker PAF-humbucking pick reproductions, rounded ’59 neck profile, and 17-degree back-angled headstock all give this guitar the feel and tone of the real deal. Produced in strictly limited numbers, only 300 of the Collector’s Choice #1 Melvyn Franks 1959 Les Paul Standard will be produced while only 125 Gary Moore Aged Edition units will be offered, aged by acclaimed artisan Tom Murphy. All guitars come protected in a Custom Shop hardshell case, and include a Certificate of Authenticity (Gary Moore Aged Edition COA to be signed by Gary), an Owner’s Manual, and full warranty documentation and adjustment literature.
